Regions:

Challenges:

  • South Australian Courts rely upon their mission critical systems being available – when they need them and where they need them. When their Case Management system stops so do the Courts – cases can’t be accessed, findings can’t be recorded, and lawyers can’t submit their outcomes.

Benefits:

  • Unplanned outages on the CAA’s crucial systems have been slashed to zero.
  • The Case Management and Jury Management systems are available and in use in courtrooms in South Australia’s 17 civil courts, every hour of every day that the courts sit.
  • Courts have ‘industrial strength’ systems which have secured the confidence of the judiciary and courts staff.

Fujitsu vs Mission Critical System Failure

Fujitsu vs Mission Critical System Failure

Australian courts are under relentless pressure to achieve predictable court schedules and reliable operations in the face of escalating case numbers.

The South Australian Courts Administration Authority’s challenge is to provide robust and dependable electronic systems to support all aspects of court operations. This requires industrial-strength solutions with very low outage rates to ensure the confidence of the judiciary, legal professionals and the public in the courts’ operations.

During the development of its new Civil Case Management System (CCMS) system, the Courts Administration Authority recognised they needed an experienced partner - a full IT service provider to work with them in finalising the system’s development and managing its implementation across South Australia’s 17 Civil Courts.

Achieving Industrial Strength Systems

CCMS is a core system for the State’s courtrooms – leaving no room for compromises in quality or reliability. The joint Fujitsu Australia / CAA team worked together to complete the complex development and stabilisation of the system prior to its implementation. With tight time frames for operation, CAA relied on Fujitsu’s expertise to address functionality and reliability issues associated with the development and manage the deployment of the system into the courtrooms.

Responsive support during and after deployment is essential to the successful implementation of such a business critical system. Fujitsu’s structured approach to issue management and resolution ensured any setbacks were dealt with promptly as they arose, and progressively slashed defects and outages down to zero.

Fujitsu continues to provide reliable support and maintenance for CCMS and other business critical systems within the courts system.

The Results

Each of South Australia’s 17 Civil Courts utilises the Civil Case Management System in their day-to-day operations. This includes real-time access from within the courtroom to retrieve case details and record outcomes.

As a result of the successful CCMS rollout, CAA and Fujitsu have worked together to develop and deliver two major enhancements - including the capability for legal firms to lodge their claims into the system via the internet.

Based upon its first-hand experience of Fujitsu’s disciplined, customer-focused approach to solving its business challenges, the CAA chose Fujitsu to support additional business critical systems.

Fujitsu’s consistently high standard of support for the systems has resulted in high satisfaction levels from the court staff, and confidence in the systems reliability and performance from all stakeholders within the court system.

CAA regularly review the market to consider their application support options. Each time they are convinced that Fujitsu’s Application Support Centre provides the best value for money in the market. The relationship has now stood the test of time for more than ten years.

“Fujitsu has proved to be a genuine partner in their relationship with CAA. Their quality of service and focus on our needs has resulted in stable and robust systems within our Civil courts.” - Trevor O’Rourke, Director, Corporate Services Courts Administration Authority, South Australia
