"Our mission, as a development department, is to pursue high performance and high quality to the maximum. From the design stage of ETERNUS, the development staff has had total solidarity in placing priority on product quality. With storage systems, the important last line of defense in data security, we knew ETERNUS required much higher levels of reliability and data protection than conventional server systems. Through thorough component preparation and redundant design, we have fully devoted ourselves to the development of system availability that even in the unlikely event of a failure ensures there is no disruption to the business."
"In ETERNUS, all major components, such as power supply units, fans, etc. are redundantly configured. In addition, data connections to and from the servers ensure that if one fails, operations can continue. Further, all major components are designed to be hot-swappable."

"Each system contains multiple controllers. Even in the unlikely event of a failure, controller redundancy is maintained to guarantee operational stability. This is a Fujitsu unique that takes our commitment to high reliability beyond that of other vendor offerings."

"If a disk is about to fail, ETERNUS detects this failure and copies the data to a hot spare disk to protect data and to maintain data redundancy. Once copied, it then immediately switches over from use of the failing disk to use of the copy. This again shows our commitment to high reliability."

"The connections between the controllers and the disks are designed to prevent a disk failure from affecting other disks. Traditionally, data transactions move from one disk to another. With such configurations however, a failure on one disk could cause a chain reaction that affected other disks. In ETERNUS storage systems, Fabric LSIs are employed for these important connections. With this architecture, the controllers and disks communicate on a one-to-one basis. This prevents any disk failure affecting other disks. This use of technology is a world's first and ensures even higher availability."

"ETERNUS is equipped with a wide variety of software-/hardware-based high-availability features so that data is highly protected, enabling your business to continue, even in the unlikely case of a component failure."

"Our storage systems are used to store and manage our customers' most important data assets. We in the Quality Assurance Department therefore, thoroughly verify the products so that data loss never happens. There are two areas on which we placed a high quality premium. One is non-stop operation of the storage system, and the other is the total protection of the stored data."

"One of the methods we use to ensure quality is the repetitive clip test. This test repeatedly generates controller errors by sending irregularly noise signals to the printed-circuit boards in an operating ETERNUS storage system. This verifies that the system recovers from such errors as its design intended."

"Another method of quality assurance is the BBC clip test. Each high-density printed-circuit board in an ETERNUS storage system is populated with thousands of parts. The impact of failure of each of these parts is verified using the BBC Clip Testing Robot developed by Fujitsu. This testing device can generate failure conditions using timings and probabilities impossible to duplicate manually. The result is sure verification of the recovery capability of the system."

"A third testing method used is the Simulated Disk test. This simulates disk errors, and ensures the failed disk is isolated, while verifying if the data protection functions have worked properly. Whatever kind of failures occur on the disks, the storage system must detect them, protect the all important data, and fully recover from the failure."

"In the verification stage, failures not predicted at the design stage can sometimes occur. In such cases, we thoroughly investigate the cause and fully solve the problem in cooperation with the design department. Importantly we actually recreate every possible failure, and verify that the system fully recovers and normally operation continues."

"We are the final port of call in assuring product quality. ETERNUS storage systems are shipped just after these manufacturing tests. With ETERNUS storage systems manufactured using only carefully-selected components, this is our commitment to offering the highest-quality products to our customers."

"We check all hard disk drives received at the manufacturing factory one by one using special testing devices. Tests also are performed in high temperature and low temperature environments for extended periods. If components that do not meet our exacting standards, we reject them to thoroughly eliminate failures from day one."

"In the assembly process, all carefully-assembled products are tested in an environment testing room. This process includes temperature cycle tests, voltage margin tests, and clock margin tests. Using these testing procedures, we verify that the total system operates normally. It is only after system testing in environments that surpass normal service conditions, eliminating all possible failures and verifying that the system works as designed; that the ETERNUS system is shipped to the customer."
As described above, Fujitsu is fully committed to high reliability from design to delivery. The results are the following highly reliable disk storage systems.

ETERNUS disk storage systems have achieved world's highest records in enterprise-class and mid-range models. (As of April 1, 2005)
